Horace died at the ‘Affair of Nery’ where L
Battery, Royal Horse Artillery was wiped out. Three of the officers were
awarded the Victoria Cross (but not Horace). The officers are buried in a
vault. A special memorial in the north-west quarter of the cemetery records
the name of 12 men of L Battery who fell in the Affair of Nery. Seven are
buried in this cemetery and five are buried in Verberie French National
Cemetery. None of the men could be individually identified, hence they are
commemorated at both sites.
